College
orientation has begun for Iimi and Krysta. Meeting new people, finding a new martial
arts school, and choosing classes are part of it. These tend to be difficult
for Iimi. Especially the last when Iimi needs to tell Krysta that she needs to
change plans because she feels… Deus Vult?!

I’m now in the post-operative phase of both eyes having cataract surgeries. The
results seem pretty good. I get replacement glasses for close
work late August or early September. I have “cheaters” in the meantime. So far, no problems.

If
you noticed the change in the comic logo, that’s Traditional Hanzi, reflecting Iimi’s
language choice. It still gives the meaning of “It’s Iimi!” in Cantonese.
The
image in the logo is the flag of Hong Kong, often used as a symbol of
Cantonese.
When
I originally envisioned CSU Moore in Chico or Arcata, a lack of Hapkido schools
wasn’t a problem. I was mainly worried about finding martial arts that Iimi and
Krysta could take that fit their characters. So, I came up with a neighborhood
where they could train in those Martial Arts, as well as characters to interact
with. Plot arcs began to grow from it.
But
once I placed Moore in the East Bay (I needed a location roughly four hours
from Babylon), I discovered that the real CS University
(CS East Bay, which I used for notes on what the general area, climate, and
demographic size of Moore should look like) actually offers
Hapkido classes on campus (Hapkido West).
As
I had already designed Moore and the Stone Lantern school, and much of the
college arc depends on Iimi not being able to continue with
Hapkido, I needed to omit any local teachers from my fictional world. Because
let’s face it: if it existed in Moore, both Iimi and Krysta would have taken
it.
I
intend no disrespect toward Hapkido West or its staff, and I wish
them all the best in the real world.

Disclaimer
I used AI to generate covers and background scenery for
Issues 184-277. I occasionally still use it to create logos, doodles, and
symbols, simply because there are no non-AI logo-creation programs (suggestions
are welcome). Some previously used images have been kept for consistency
(iconic buildings and “historic photographs”) with the intent of replacing them
when possible. Any other appearance of AI means the stock art seller I
purchased from misrepresented their product.
In this issue, the AI (コーPilot) answer on Wing Chun and Hapkido was taken from
AI because I wanted a clunky, machine-written answer. I’m told that in reality,
merging Ip Man Wing Chun and Hapkido can be done, but it is more difficult than
this answer would lead you to believe.
