It’s Iimi! Stay on Script!

Owen Wilson hears Caitlin talking about still being a polytheist even though she rejected witchcraft. It gives him an idea… perhaps she might be less hostile to the Mormon concept of Eternal Progression than Iimi and her friends are. He rounds up another Mormon, Lorenzo Hillman, to assist him. Lorenzo assures Owen that it should go smoothly as long as they… Stay on Script!

Post-Comic Notes:

Mormon home visits tend to be a series that follows specific structures to get the person to join their religion. The talking points used by Owen and Lorenzo are used in the first visit. However, Iimi’s comments knocked him off balance, so the two could not follow the usual structure.

Excerpts of the South Park episode mentioned can be found on YouTube. I don’t recommend it. As Iimi points out, there’s more appeal to mockery than refutation involved here. Those tactics are more likely to make you look like a bully than anything else. In contrast, Iimi takes a “this is why I think this is wrong” approach to Mormonism.

It’s Iimi! Blood Libel!

On a Monday morning, heading to club period, Yaminah tells the girls that Gali is deeply upset about something involving their religion. They promptly head over to see if they can help Gali, but they are unsure what is wrong. Will they be able to help when the topic turns out to be the ugly history of... Blood Libel

Post-Comic Notes:

March 24th is the actual day in Butler’s Lives of the Saints “commemorating” these "saints." The Church had been working to remove them from the calendar for a long time, finalizing it in 1969.

A brief overview of “Blood Libel” can be found here: https://www.catholicworldreport.com/2023/04/17/a-short-history-of-the-lie-of-the-blood-libel/

The Catholic Encyclopedia entry that Iimi quotes Pope Innocent IV from can be found here: https://www.newadvent.org/cathen/08386a.htm

If you must read about the accounts of Simon and William, you'll find them in Butler's (the unabridged at least). Just be aware that the Church has ordered them removed from the calendar as spurious and condemns blood libel. The fact that they were never removed from Butler despite the medieval condemnations of blood libel by the Popes is something I deplore.

If you’re curious how Iimi’s sensei uses belts in the martial arts compared to other Aikido schools, here’s how it works (though there seems to be many variations):

Before 6th kyu: white (no belt for Iimi)
6th: yellow (white for Iimi)
5th: yellow w/ stripe (white for Iimi)
4th: blue (white for Iimi)
3rd: blue w/ stripe (white for Iimi)
2nd: brown
1st: brown w/ stripe
(After that comes the black belts)

It’s Iimi! Peace, Peace! They Say, Though There Is No Peace

The Socratic Club and the Paladins have a joint meeting. Iimi is asked to lead it like a class. The topic is war. However, students are divided on just peace in the current political climate. Many favor solutions where Iimi can only echo the prophet Jeremiah… “Peace, Peace! They Say, Though There Is No Peace.”

Pre-Comic Notes:

The comic title comes from Jeremiah 6:14.

Post-Comic Notes:
While I discovered it too late to include in the comic, chapters 20 and 21 of Pope Francis’ Hope, The Autobiography gave many more insights into war and peace. I highly recommend reading it.

The news of a tentative Ukraine ceasefire was announced while I was in the midst of finalizing this comic. If it still happens (the news the morning after I uploaded it indicated Russia was rejecting it) when it is published, please pray that it last and lead to a just peace. If it fails, continue to pray for peace.
